Having received the Semogue 1250 some weeks ago, I got stuck into using it straight away to ensure it broke in as quickly as possible, to ensure an honest review, as always! The 1250 is made from ‘Best 90% Tops Boar’ bristle, with a 22mm knot/55mm loft, all set in a lovely varnished Oak wood handle. Across the 7+ Semogue boar brushes that I own, I haven’t found ANY of them to have any distinct ‘funk’ (boar smell) while breaking in, which is actually amazing. Other brands of boar brushes I own had a smell for the first week or 2 of use, but never Semogue. Semogue brushes are so beautifully crafted – every one of their brushes you own you know is absolutely top-quality. The first few uses of the 1250 had some light scratch and scrub, but that is to be expected with any new boar brush. It started to break-in quickly – with a knot size resembling that of the 1305 (& 1800, I believe), I found this 1250 to break in a bit quicker than the 1305. The tips quickly started to get soft and luxurious in feel, and the brush started to gain a bit of that distinctly gorgeous ‘Semogue bloom’. The 1250 is a beautiful alternative to the 1305, having a similar knot size (different grade however). The tips of the 1250 are very soft, and offer just the right amount of backbone meaning that this brush is not floppy – perfect for loading and lathering hard soaps, as well as soft soaps and creams. I have used this brush for virtually every style of soap and cream and find it performs equally well in every scenario. The brush loads soap very easily, and once broken in, when face lathering, I found the knot feels like a soft cloud on the face, no particular scrub or scratching sensation, just soft tip, great backbone, and fantastic ability to build a creamy lather very quickly. That is actually one thing that stood out to me – this 1250 builds an awesome lather very effectively, very quickly. It holds enough lather for 3 comfortable passes, but if you want an extra pass you may need to reload. If you are a Semogue fan and collector, then check out this Semogue 1250. You won’t be disappointed.
